THE DEPARTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE, TRANSPORT, REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT has responsibility for the following matters:

AIRSERVICES AUSTRALIA is a government-owned Commonwealth Authority established under the Air Services Act 1995. It is the national provider of air navigation services and aviation rescue and fire fighting services, which are planned, developed, operated and managed on an Australia-wide basis. The air navigation services include:

- Airspace management
- Air traffic control
- Traffic and flight information
- Navigation services
- Aeronautical information
- Environment monitoring

THE CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY is a Statuory Authority. It is responsible for the safety regulation of civil air operations in Australian territory and the operation of Australian Aircraft outside Australian territory. Principal activities are:

- Development and promulgation of aviation safety standards
- Development of strategies to enforce compliance with safety standards
- Issue of certificates, licences, registrations and permits
- Surveillance of the aviation industry
